The 2nd J.P. Clark International Conference began on October 10, 2024, at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), hosted by the Department of English to honor the late literary icon, Professor John Pepper Clark-Bekederemo.

The 2nd J.P. Clark International Conference commenced on Thursday, October 10, 2024, at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), hosted by the Department of English to honor the late literary icon, Professor John Pepper Clark-Bekederemo.

Held in the Faculty of Arts Boardroom, this year's theme, Decolonizing the Colonial and Postcolonial African Modernity, attracted a diverse group of students, scholars, and literary enthusiasts eager to discuss the lasting legacy and contributions of one of Nigeria’s most celebrated poets and playwrights.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development Services), Prof. Ayodele Atsenuwa, represented the Vice-Chancellor during the opening ceremony. She praised Prof. J.P. Clark's significant impact, noting that his works continue to shape our understanding of contemporary issues. “His life was expressed in his works and publications; and by which we are able to make sense of our own world today,” she stated.

In his remarks, the Dean of Arts, Prof. Akanbi Mudashiru Ilupeju, commended the Department of English for its ongoing dedication to celebrating Prof. J.P. Clark’s legacy. He emphasized the importance of maintaining the connection to literary history in academic discourse.

Co-Convener of the conference and widow of the late icon, Prof. Ebun Clark, expressed her gratitude to the Department of English and UNILAG for their commitment to honoring her husband's memory.

The conference featured a virtual keynote lecture by Professor Hope Eghagha titled Disappearing Boundaries, New Intersections, and the Future of Literature. He explored the evolving landscape of literature amidst technological advancements, urging universities to adapt to remain relevant in a changing world. He asserted, “Literature can only survive if readership is guaranteed.”

Following the keynote address, the event included a plenary lecture delivered by Prof. Ebun Clark and moderated by Prof. Patrick Oloko. The conference then transitioned into parallel panels, allowing participants to present their research and insights.

The 2nd J.P. Clark International Conference will conclude on Friday, October 11, 2024, continuing its mission to engage in critical discussions around the future of literature and the decolonization of modern African narratives.
