Yusuf Maitama Sule University Kano, through its newly established Center for Qur'anic Research and Studies, has launched its first-ever Qur'anic Recitation Competition (Musabaqah), bringing together participants from 22 states across Nigeria. The competition, which commenced on October 10, 2024, will run for four days, with male and female participants competing in three categories: 20 hizifs, 40 hizifs, and 60 hizifs.

The event's opening ceremony drew numerous distinguished scholars and dignitaries from both Qur'anic and Western educational backgrounds. Among the notable attendees were Dan Galadiman Kano, Hakimin Gwale, Alhaji Yahaya Ibn Abbas, and Emeritus Professor Sani Zaharaddeen, the Chief Imam of Kano State. Professor Mukhtar Atiku Kurawa, Vice Chancellor of Yusuf Maitama Sule University, served as the chief host.

During his address, Professor Kurawa expressed pride in the competition's organization, highlighting the rapid progress of the Center for Qur'anic Research and Studies, which was established only five months ago. He commended the center’s leadership and emphasized the importance of personal and spiritual growth throughout the competition. The Vice Chancellor also pointed to the university's ongoing development efforts, praying for the successful completion of the event.

Dr. Muhammad Isma'il, Director of the Center for Qur'anic Research and Studies, credited Professor Kurawa for his vision and support in establishing the center. The Chief Imam of Kano State, Professor Sani Zaharaddeen, led prayers for the event, while Hakimin Gwale, the royal father of the day, praised the university’s leadership and expressed hopes for hosting an international Qur'anic competition in the future.

The competition's judging panel includes experts from eight different states, with Chief Judge Gwani Muhammad Kabir Yakub, an alumnus of the university, overseeing proceedings. The event marks a significant milestone in the growth of the Center for Qur'anic Research and Studies and its contributions to Qur'anic scholarship in Nigeria.
