On Thursday, August 29, 2024, the University of Lagos (UNILAG) formally welcomed Associate Professor Shota Furukawa from Keio University, Japan. Professor Furukawa, an Associate Professor at the Hills Joint Research Laboratory for Future Preventive Medicine and Wellness and a Full Stack Engineer at LiFE Investors, is serving as a facilitator at the Data Science School organized by UNILAG’s Department of Statistics.

The reception took place with the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development Services), Professor Ayodele Atsenuwa, leading the welcome. Professor Atsenuwa highlighted UNILAG's openness to collaborative opportunities and expressed enthusiasm about the program’s potential.

Professor Furukawa is responsible for instructing participants in machine learning and deep learning techniques. With his expertise in technological advancement and SaaS system development, he brings significant value to the Data Science School.

Accompanied by the Head of the Department of Statistics, Professor Muminu Adamu, and other members of the Local Organizing Committee Dr. (Mrs.) Bridget Nkemole, Dr. (Mrs.) Josephine Onyeka-Ubaka, Dr. Rotimi Ogundeji, Dr. Nofiu Badmus, and Mr. Obafemi Keshinro Professor Furukawa's visit marks a key moment for the Data Science School, which is being conducted in collaboration with Statistics without Borders.

The yearly program, titled “New Trends in Industry Engagement and Applications,” began on Monday, August 19, and will conclude on Friday, August 30, 2024. The initiative underscores UNILAG’s commitment to advancing data science education and fostering international collaboration.
