The University of Lagos (UNILAG) is currently hosting a three-day workshop on Wetlands and Ecological Assessment for conservationists and environmental scientists. This groundbreaking event, the first of its kind in West Africa, kicked off on Monday, October 7, 2024, drawing participants from Cameroon, Ghana, and Nigeria, with a diverse range of professionals in environmental science and management.

The workshop, held at the Centre for Sustainable Environment and Social Inclusion at the D.K. Olukoya Central Research and Reference Laboratories, aims to enhance awareness of the vital role wetlands play in biodiversity conservation, water regulation, and livelihoods.

Dr. Excellence Akeredolu, the Nigerian Coordinator from the Department of Zoology, welcomed participants and urged them to leverage the opportunity for knowledge exchange. His sentiments were echoed by Dr. Dingha Chrispo Babila, the Cameroonian Coordinator, who highlighted the significance of the Society for Wetlands, Africa's generous funding and encouraged participants to build lasting professional networks.

The workshop's first session was delivered by Steven Ellery, a Wetland Ecologist from Groundtruth Environment & Engineering Company, South Africa, who introduced attendees to the science of wetlands. His presentation emphasized the interactions between hydrology, geomorphology, and vegetation in wetland formation, providing a deeper understanding of these crucial ecosystems.

The workshop is set to run through October 9, fostering collaboration among conservation scientists, students, and environmental engineers from across the globe. It is organized by the Society for Wetlands Scientists, Africa, in partnership with UNILAG's Student Chapter of the Society for Ecological Restoration, CoESESI, and Groundtruth Environment & Engineering Company.
