UNILAG Law Students Celebrate Record-Breaking Success at International Law Competitions

Law students from the University of Lagos (UNILAG) were celebrated by the University Management for their outstanding performances in two prestigious international Moot competitions: the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition and the 31st Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot 2024.

Two teams of students from the Faculty of Law at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) have been celebrated by the University Management for their exceptional performances in two prestigious international Moot competitions: the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition and the 31st Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot 2024.

The victorious teams, led by the Dean of Law, Professor Ige Bolodeoku, were warmly received by Vice-Chancellor Professor Folasade T. Ogunsola and her team on Monday, July 29, 2024, at the Senate House.

The team leader and President of The Mooting Society, Oreoluwa Adejumo, shared their journey of competing against over 150 universities globally after overcoming challenges from over 700 universities at the group stages. Their efforts culminated in winning “The King and Spalding Spirit of Jessup Award.” Adejumo expressed gratitude to the University Management for their unwavering support.

The Vice-Chancellor praised the students for their dedication and hard work, which she described as a reflection of the high-quality education provided by the UNILAG Law Faculty. She stated, “Your triumphs are a testament to the Faculty’s dedication to academic excellence and your own determination. Keep it up!”

The UNILAG team for the Jessup competition included Adejumo Oreoluwa, Anyama Chimdumebi Henry, Okoli Chukwudifu Jason, Adegunju Oluwatomilade, and Adedayo Michael Alex. They emerged winners of the National Round for Nigeria and represented the country at the White and Case International Rounds in Washington D.C., from May 30 to April 7, 2024, earning a $1,000 award and the “Flag of Flag.”

Representing UNILAG at the Willem C. Vis Moot were Chidera Okoro, Betty Elikwu, Gloria Alonge, Ifeoluwa Aruwajoye, Oluwatoyin Salami, and Susana Oladejo, coached by Okikenna Osele, Adedoyin Adepetu, Moyinoluwa Adewale, and Muhammad Hayat Faisal. The team won the 3rd East African Vis Pre-moot in Nairobi, Kenya, and reached the Round of 64 at the global competition in Vienna, Austria, becoming the first West African team to achieve this milestone.

UNILAG’s remarkable achievements at these international law competitions underscore the institution’s commitment to academic excellence and the exceptional talents of its students.
