Professor Mary Grace Fajonyomi, a distinguished professor of guidance and counseling at the University of Ilorin (Unilorin), has revealed a specific incident involving a student who reportedly hacked his father's bank account, stealing over N25 million. Shockingly, the student allegedly used a portion of the ill-gotten funds to engage in online gambling activities, particularly Bet9ja, and extravagantly splurged the remaining sum on organizing a lavish party for his girlfriend.

The professor made this disclosure while delivering a keynote address at a stakeholders' dialogue organized by the Kwara State Government, themed: "Stemming the Tide of Social Vices Among Students: Panacea for Growth."

"The gravity of the situation cannot be overstated. We are witnessing an alarming rise in cases where students are resorting to unethical and criminal means to finance their vices," Professor Fajonyomi expressed with concern.

She further elaborated on the dire consequences of gambling addiction among students, citing instances where individuals have jeopardized their academic pursuits by squandering their tuition fees on betting platforms like Bet9ja.

"Our counseling center is inundated with cases of students unable to register for their courses due to their reckless indulgence in gambling. It is disheartening to witness young minds succumbing to the allure of quick riches at the expense of their future prospects," she lamented.
