The Registrar of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), Barrister Mansur Adeleke Alfanla, has proposed the establishment of a single agency to oversee the financial operations of public universities in Nigeria. This suggestion aims to eliminate inefficiencies caused by overlapping oversight from bodies such as the National Assembly, the Auditor General’s office, and the National Universities Commission (NUC).

Key Recommendations

In an interview in Ilorin, Barrister Alfanla remarked:
"A central body would eliminate inconsistencies and ensure streamlined operations, avoiding duplication of efforts that hinder progress."

He also identified the following challenges affecting public universities:

  • Funding Shortages: Insufficient resources for infrastructure and academic growth.
  • Security Threats: Issues like encroachment by cattle herders, leading to the destruction of farmland and properties.

Barrister Alfanla recounted the loss of eight hectares of cultivated beans due to cattle encroachment, emphasizing the need for immediate security reforms.
