The Innovative Veterinary Solutions For AntiMicrobial Resistance (INNOVET-AMR) group, which has been at the forefront of veterinary research in Nigeria, will be collaborating with an international consortium of researchers. This includes experts from Spain’s Institute of Agrifood Research and Technology (IRTA) and the Royal Holloway University of London, UK. Together, they aim to pioneer a bacteriocin-rich extract (BRE), which holds promise as a viable alternative to traditional antibiotics in the agricultural sector.
Antimicrobial Resistance poses a significant threat to global health, with the potential to render current antibiotic treatments ineffective. The innovative approach undertaken by the UNILORIN research group could lead to a paradigm shift in how food-producing animals are treated, ensuring both animal welfare and public health safety.
