UNIMAID VC, Prof. Mele, Hosts New SUG Executive; Reviews 2025/2026 Strategic Budget
The Students' Union Government of the University of Maiduguri under the leadership of it President Aliyu Idriss Dakasku (D.K) paid a courtesy visit to the university management earlier today.
The meeting was attended by the Vice-Chancellor Professor Muhammed Laminu Mele alongside key principal officers of the university, including the Registrar, Deputy Registrar, Dean of Student Affairs, University Bursar, University Librarian, Chief Investigation Officer, and the Students’ Relations Officer.
After the introductions of the university management members present, the executives of the Students’ Union Government also took turns to introduce themselves.
In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor warmly congratulated the newly elected SUG executives and welcomed them to the responsibility of leadership. He encouraged the executives to make good use of the opportunity given to them to serve the student community. According to him, their time in office is limited, and they should therefore focus on making a positive impact and leaving behind a legacy that will be remembered by students and the university community.
The SUG President Aliyu Idriss Dakasku (D.K) was then given the opportunity to present the proposed budget for the 2025/2026 academic session. After listening to the presentation, the Vice-Chancellor advised that once the budget receives approval, the union should immediately begin making the necessary proposals and plans for its implementation.
He also commended the efforts of the SUG executives and encouraged them to remain committed to their responsibilities while prioritizing the welfare and interests of students across the university.
Summary of SUG Session Proposals
During the meeting, the Students’ Union Government also highlighted some of the key proposals planned for the 2025/2026 academic session. These proposals are aimed at improving the welfare, experience, and development of students across the university.
A major area of focus is the improvement of student welfare and campus facilities. The union plans to advocate for better maintenance and upgrading of important student amenities and infrastructure in order to create a cleaner, safer, and more conducive environment for students both in lecture areas and hostels.
The proposals also emphasize student development and engagement. Plans are in place to organize programmes that will promote leadership development, entrepreneurship, intellectual growth, and health awareness among students. These initiatives are expected to equip students with skills that will benefit them academically and prepare them for opportunities beyond the university.
The SUG also intends to promote social interaction and unity among students through organized activities and events on campus. Such programmes will help strengthen the sense of community within the university and provide students with opportunities to relax and interact.
In addition, attention will also be given to improving relaxation and recreational spaces on campus where students can unwind in a conducive environment. Sports and physical activities were also highlighted as an important aspect of student life. The union plans to support sporting activities and competitions that will encourage participation, promote healthy living, and foster unity among students.
The meeting ended on a positive note, and a group photograph was taken with the Vice-Chancellor, his principal officers, and the SUG executives.
