UNIMAID VC Urges Students to Uphold Values
Prof. Mohammed Laminu Mele, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Maiduguri, has urged students of the English and Literary Studies department to revive the values the department is known for. During a courtesy visit by the National Association of Students of English and Literary Studies (NASELS), Prof. Mele emphasized the importance of fostering a culture of reading and writing and called for the resumption of student magazine publications.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID), Prof. Mohammed Laminu Mele, has called on students of the English and Literary Studies department to revive the core values that have defined the department over the years.
Prof. Mele made this statement while addressing the Executive Council of the National Association of Students of English and Literary Studies (NASELS), during a courtesy visit to congratulate him on his recent appointment as the substantive Vice-Chancellor of the institution.
In his remarks, Prof. Mele emphasized his dedication to fostering a strong reading and writing culture within the department. He highlighted the need to resume the publication of student magazines, which would provide a platform for students to showcase their literary and intellectual abilities. According to him, such initiatives will enrich the academic environment and contribute to the overall development of students.
The Vice-Chancellor further assured the students of his administration's commitment to enhancing both academic and extracurricular activities within the department and the wider university. He pledged to renovate the NASELS secretariat, a long-anticipated project that would create a conducive space for academic and social activities.
Additionally, Prof. Mele encouraged the NASELS Executive Council to revive several dormant activities within the association, stressing the importance of leadership and urging the executives to set a positive example for their peers. He underscored the vital role that student associations play in shaping the future of young intellectuals, noting that their efforts would have a lasting impact on the university community.
In response, the President of NASELS, Comrade Gideon Irmiya, expressed gratitude for the Vice-Chancellor’s words of encouragement and unwavering support. He reaffirmed the association's commitment to reviving its activities and positively contributing to the academic and social life of the university.
Prof. Mele, who also serves as the patron of NASELS, was warmly welcomed by the student representatives, with Irmiya stating, "Your support means a lot to us, and we are confident that under your leadership, our department and the university will achieve greater heights."
