University of Ibadan Mourns the Loss of Renowned Physicist, Professor Idowu Farai

The University of Ibadan community gathered to pay tribute to the late Professor Idowu Peter Farai, a distinguished scholar and pillar of the Department of Physics, who passed away on April 18, 2025.

Professor Farai's dedication to the University spanned over four decades, during which he made significant contributions to the field of Radiation and Health Physics.

Professor Farai's academic journey began with a Hons) degree in Physics from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, in 1979. He went on to earn his Master's degree in Radiation and Health Physics from the University of Ibadan in 1984 and later obtained his PhD in Physics in 1990. He rose through the ranks to become a Professor of Radiation and Health Physics in 2006, retiring after 42 years of service.

Professor Farai was known for his exceptional teaching skills, mentoring numerous students, including 11 PhD students, six of whom have become professors. His colleagues and students alike remember him for his quiet dignity, kindness, and generosity.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kayode Adebowale, described Professor Farai as "a giant of our academic landscape" and "an embodiment of the finest ideals" of the University. Professor Adeniyi Olowofela, Federal Character Commissioner representing Oyo State, also paid tribute to the late professor, highlighting his remarkable contributions to academia .

Professor Idowu Farai's legacy extends beyond his research output, as he inspired countless generations of physicists through his teaching and mentorship. His impact on the University of Ibadan and the scientific community will be remembered for years to come .
