University of Ibadan to Launch Sports Academy, Eyes Global Talent Export and Economic Growth
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Kayode Adebowale, mni, FAS, has announced a strategic shift in the institution's athletic policy, declaring the university's intent to "key into sports as a business."
Speaking at the formal inauguration of the Committee for the Establishment of the University of Ibadan Sports Academy (UISA), Professor Adebowale highlighted the massive economic potential of the global sports industry. He noted that by identifying and nurturing world-class talent early, the university can replicate the successful models seen in developed nations.
In a move to create a seamless talent discovery path, the Vice-Chancellor integrated the leadership of the UI Staff School and the International School, Ibadan (ISI) into the planning committee. This ensures that sports development begins at the foundational level, providing young athletes with professional facilities and support systems from an early age.
The Convener of the committee, Professor Olufemi A. Adegbesan from the Department of Human Kinetics, described the initiative as "phenomenal." He asserted that the academy is designed to be self-sustaining due to its commercial viability.
"The university already has the required facilities, with significant potential for upgrades," Professor Adegbesan stated. He predicted that the UISA would eventually place the University of Ibadan on the global map as a primary "exporter of sports talents."
The committee is expected to leverage existing institutional memory and expertise to create a sustainable framework for professional sports management within the university ecosystem.
