Professor Kayode O. Adebowale, mni, FAS, fspsp, has reaffirmed the institution’s position as a leader in innovation and progressive transformation through its Quality Assurance Policy and Strategy (QAPS).
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan (UI), Professor Kayode O. Adebowale, mni, FAS, fspsp, has reaffirmed the institution’s position as a leader in innovation and progressive transformation through its Quality Assurance Policy and Strategy (QAPS). Speaking at a sensitization program for student leaders and class representatives, he highlighted the university's newly developed online platform for evaluating the teaching effectiveness of lecturers, technologists, and other staff.
The event, organized by the Directorate of Quality Assurance, showcased the university’s commitment to leveraging technology to enhance educational standards. Professor Adebowale commended the Director of Quality Assurance, Professor K. O. Falade, and the Information Technology and Media Services (ITeMS) unit for initiating the platform and training students in its use.
According to the Vice-Chancellor, the University of Ibadan’s approach to quality assurance encompasses both internal mechanisms for meeting global higher education standards and external accreditation, assessment, and audits. He emphasized that fostering a culture of quality among staff and students is central to the university’s goal of maintaining its status as Nigeria’s premier university.
“Teaching effectiveness cannot be fully achieved without input from students, who are key stakeholders in the system,” Professor Adebowale noted. He urged students to use the platform for honest and constructive feedback, avoiding misuse such as victimization or unwarranted reporting. Instead, he encouraged them to view the platform as a tool for enhancing service delivery and improving the overall learning experience.
The online evaluation system replaces the previous pen-and-paper method, enabling semester-based assessments of lecturers, technologists, field workers, and technicians. The platform is designed to be user-friendly and accessible via mobile phones.
The Director of Quality Assurance, Professor Falade, stressed the importance of accurate evaluations, stating that they are crucial for providing quality services and ensuring continual improvement within the university. He urged student leaders to educate their peers about the significance of providing fair and constructive feedback.
Representatives from the ITeMS unit, including the Head of Software Development, Mr. Seyi Oladele, and Principal Software Analyst, Mr. George Abi, provided a detailed demonstration of the platform. Students were trained on login procedures and other essential features and had the opportunity to ask questions to ensure a full understanding of the system.
The initiative underscores UI’s dedication to academic excellence and its commitment to sustaining its reputation as a trailblazer in higher education innovation in Nigeria and beyond.
