University of Port Harcourt Refutes Reports of Student Injuries or Death in Cult Clash
The University of Port Harcourt has dismissed reports of student injuries or deaths from a recent cult clash on its Abuja campus. The conflict, involving factions of the Vikings Confraternity, resulted in one student being injured but not killed.
The University of Port Harcourt (UniPort) has officially refuted reports claiming that students were injured or killed during a cult clash on its Abuja campus on Wednesday. The institution's management, security personnel, and the Nigeria Police Force's anti-cultism unit promptly addressed the situation, ensuring no fatalities or significant injuries occurred.
According to Reports, the altercation involved a violent clash between two factions of the Vikings Confraternity, driven by internal leadership disputes. During the incident, a student affiliated with one faction was reportedly attacked and injured with machetes. However, Student Union Government (SUG) President Azirindu Martins confirmed that the injured student is recovering in the hospital and dismissed rumors of any deaths.
Martins called for enhanced security measures, including regular patrols of the campus's bushy areas, noting that the weapons used in the attack were not brought from within the university premises. He stated, “That’s not true, no student died. The incident yesterday was a cult clash… and a particular faction came against the other faction. The school security, along with the Vice Chancellor and policemen, intervened quickly, apprehending three individuals and recovering a machete.”
In response to the incident, Sam Kpenu, Head of Information and Public Relations, emphasized that the University of Port Harcourt's management, alongside security and police units, swiftly intervened to prevent any major disruptions. Vice Chancellor Professor Owunari Georgewill was present at the scene to oversee the situation and ensure order was restored.
Kpenu reiterated the university’s firm stance against cultism and disruptive behavior, stating, “Contrary to some inaccurate media claims, no student was killed or injured in the incident. The swift actions of the Management, security unit, and the anti-cultism unit of the Nigeria Police Force led to the immediate apprehension of those involved and ensured no further disruption.”
The university's administration assures that normal academic activities have continued as usual and that the students involved are currently being interrogated by the Nigeria Police Force in Port Harcourt. The university remains committed to maintaining a peaceful and safe environment for all students.
