The University of Nigeria, Nsukka is facing a prolonged power outage due to over N600 million in unpaid electricity bills to the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC). The university management is working to resolve the issue and has urged patience from the university community.

The management of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has expressed concern over the ongoing power outage across its campuses, citing excessive electricity bills from the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) as the cause. According to a memorandum issued by the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Polycarp Chigbu, the university's outstanding debt to the EEDC stands at over N600 million as of mid-August 2024.

The university is currently listed under Band A consumption by the EEDC, leading to the accumulation of unsustainable electricity bills. Prof. Chigbu described the situation as unacceptable and beyond the financial capacity of the university’s management.

The memorandum assured the university community that efforts are underway to escalate the issue to higher authorities for resolution. In the meantime, the management is doing its best to provide power with the limited resources available and urged the university community to remain calm and patient during this challenging period.
