The University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN), renowned for establishing Nigeria’s first Department of Psychology, celebrated the 60th anniversary of the psychology course in the country on May 16, 2024. This milestone event, held at the Faculty of Social Sciences Auditorium, also marked the 11th annual conference of the Department of Psychology, UNN.

The conference theme, “Surviving Troubled Times: Prioritizing the Well-being of Nigerians Amidst Crisis,” resonated deeply with attendees, highlighting the critical importance of safeguarding the psychological well-being of individuals during challenging times.

A key highlight of the event was the recognition of Hon. Ajah Chinonso, Chairman of Ohaozara Local Government Council in Ebonyi State, for his exemplary grassroots leadership. Hon. Ajah was awarded the “Voice of the Masses Award” after a meticulous national survey conducted by the Psychology Department of UNN.

Presenting the award on behalf of Hon. Ajah was Nze Magnus Eze. The department praised Ajah’s significant contributions to youth empowerment, infrastructure development, and support for the less privileged, noting his remarkable projects including road construction, streetlight installations, and substantial investments in human capital development. Ajah's initiatives, such as bursary awards, scholarships, and payment of WAEC fees for students, were particularly commended.

Prof. Lawrence Amazue, Head of the Psychology Department, emphasized Ajah's transparent and impactful leadership. He noted that Ajah’s achievements in security, health provision, and community development have greatly alleviated the suffering of Ohaozara residents.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Charles Igwe, represented by Prof. Romanus Okonkwo, reiterated the historical significance of the psychology department in Nigeria, urging scholars to amplify the voices of the vulnerable and safeguard their rights.
