UTME Candidates Encounter Registration Challenges Due to SIM Card Issues

Some candidates have expressed frustration over their inability to register for the ongoing Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) due to difficulties with their SIM cards.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) commenced registration for the UTME on January 15th, 2024, with the process set to end on February 26th, 2024.

One candidate, Promise Okeogene from Bariga, Lagos, shared his predicament, stating that he was unable to proceed with registration because he had lost the SIM card he used for registration in 2020 when he was underage. Now 18 years old, he encountered challenges using a new SIM card for registration.

Similarly, another candidate, Ganiyu Aderogba from Ikorodu, explained his dilemma, noting that his new phone number was not linked with his National Identification Number (NIN), and JAMB insisted on using the old phone number registered in 2021, which he had lost.

In response to these challenges, JAMB spokesperson Dr. Benjamin Fabian emphasized that the SIM card serves as a unique identifier for candidates, and the first phone number used for registration must be maintained for subsequent processes. He emphasized the importance of blocking avenues for impersonation and examination malpractice, hence the requirement to use the original SIM card.

As of Thursday, a total of 1.7 million candidates had registered for the UTME.For candidates facing similar issues, JAMB advises them to retrieve or reactivate their old SIM cards to facilitate the registration process.

This news highlights the challenges faced by some UTME candidates in completing their registration due to SIM card-related issues, underscoring the importance of adhering to JAMB's registration requirements.
