Young Mother Overcomes Teenage Pregnancy to Earn Psychology Degree and Prestigious Award
Determined to pursue her education, Andante took her A-level exams while four months pregnant. Her resolve saw her through to the University of Bristol, where she excelled academically, achieving a 90% grade point average.
Andante Singer, a 23-year-old from Somerset, has graduated from the University of Bristol with a degree in Psychology, overcoming the challenges of an unexpected pregnancy at 18. She also received the British Psychological Society undergraduate award for her exceptional academic performance.
At 18, Andante discovered she was pregnant, a revelation she initially felt ashamed of. Despite her fears, her family, particularly her mother, provided unwavering support. "It’s so important to have a support network," Andante said, crediting her family for helping her through the difficult times.

Throughout her university journey, Andante received a bursary and additional support, including reduced fees at the university nursery, which enabled her to balance motherhood and studies. "Once I knew that support was in place, I was able to make the right choice for me," she said.

Graduating alongside her three-year-old son, Andante hopes her story will help reduce the stigma surrounding teen mothers. "I’d love to reduce the stigmatization of teen mothers by showing what I’ve accomplished," she said.
Currently working as a reading mentor, Andante plans to pursue a PhD in psychology and aims to become an academic researcher.
