Ademola Adeleke, a young Nigerian man who faced adversity when he lost his vision and subsequently dropped out of high school, has achieved a remarkable milestone by earning a master’s degree at Liverpool Hope University in the United Kingdom.
Ademola was awarded the prestigious Commonwealth Scholarship, which enabled him to pursue his master’s degree in Disabilities Studies at Liverpool Hope University. Reflecting on his journey, Ademola shared on LinkedIn that winning the scholarship was a dream come true, especially after experiencing several rejections when applying for fully funded scholarships.

Prior to his master’s studies, Ademola earned a bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication from the University of Nsukka, Nigeria. Upon relocating to the United Kingdom, he encountered challenges, including adapting to the distinctive Liverpool accent and navigating academic coursework with impaired vision. Despite these obstacles, Ademola engaged fully in interactive class sessions, presentations, essays, and group discussions during his studies.
Highlighting the depth of his academic pursuits, Ademola focused his dissertation on the portrayal of blindness in Nigerian cinema, specifically critiquing its misrepresentation in Nollywood films.
During his time at Liverpool Hope University, Ademola also completed a valuable 7-week summer internship, which provided him with practical experience and skills in his field.
Expressing his gratitude for the support he received throughout his academic journey, Ademola emphasized that despite the challenges, the experience was ultimately fulfilling. His story serves as an inspiration, demonstrating resilience and determination in the face of significant adversity.
