Amra Onize Salihu, a 500-level Law student at the University of Abuja, emerged winner of the 2026 Amnesty International Intervarsity Debate Competition, earning recognition for outstanding advocacy, critical thinking, and public speaking skills.

A 500-level Law student of the University of Abuja (UNIABUJA), Amra Onize Salihu, has emerged winner of the 4th edition of the Amnesty International Intervarsity Debate Competition,myschoolnews reports.

Salihu secured victory at the grand finale of the competition after defeating 24 contestants from different universities across Nigeria. The event, themed “Speak. Act. Defend. Rights,” was held on Monday, May 18, 2026, in Abuja.

Speaking after her victory, the brilliant law student expressed joy and gratitude for the achievement.

“It took a lot of sleepless nights, research, training, and sacrifices. I am just glad it all paid off and I could bring the glory home,” she said.

In addition to Salihu’s individual success, the University of Abuja also emerged overall winner of the competition with a total score of 86.1 points, finishing ahead of six other finalist universities at the grand finale.

The Country Director of Amnesty International Nigeria, Isa Sanusi, explained that the debate competition was organised to promote the culture of debate, meaningful conversations, and awareness about human rights among young people and students.

The Amnesty International Intervarsity Debate Competition has continued to serve as a platform for empowering Nigerian students to speak on critical societal and human rights issues while developing strong public speaking and leadership skills.

The victory by Amra Onize Salihu further highlights the growing academic excellence and debating strength of the University of Abuja on the national stage.
