60-Year-Old Man Excels, Bags First Class in Sociology at UI
Retired Banker, 60, Achieves First-Class Honors in Sociology at UI, Earns Eight Awards as Best Graduating Student Farouk Sanni, a 60-year-old retired banker, has attained the position of the best graduating student in the Department of Sociology at the University of Ibadan, securing a first-class degree along with eight prestigious awards. Sanni, driven by his desire to comprehend human behavior, transitioned from initially studying accounting at Obafemi Awolowo University.
In a remarkable achievement, 60-year-old Farouk Sanni has emerged as the top-performing student in the Department of Sociology at the University of Ibadan, securing a first-class degree and winning eight awards as the best-graduating student.
Farouk Sanni, a retired banker, expressed his sense of accomplishment in studying sociology, citing his quest to understand human behavior as the driving force behind his academic pursuit. Having initially studied accounting at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, due to an imposed course choice by a relative, Sanni decided to explore his genuine interest in sociology after retiring from UBA.

During the 75th convocation ceremony at the University of Ibadan, Alhaji, as he is fondly called, shared his experience and the challenges he faced studying alongside individuals of the same age as his children. He mentioned the decision to stay healthy and pursue his academic goals, taking the necessary steps, including writing JAMB, to be admitted to study sociology.
Sanni, who received eight awards for his outstanding achievement, revealed that he even wrote the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) alongside his child, who is currently studying law at the University of Ibadan. Reflecting on his unique experience, Sanni stated, "Studying in a class where you have those who are of the same age as your children can be very challenging, but I was magnanimous to accommodate what happened."
Dr. Oludayo Tade, a lecturer in the sociology department, commended Mr. Sanni's dedication, highlighting the unconventional yet determined approach he took to his studies. Tade mentioned that Sanni often read under a tree in the faculty of social sciences, even tying a chair to a tree for a makeshift study space.

"This 60-year-old Sanni graduated with first class in sociology from the University of Ibadan as the best student in his set and won 8 awards," stated Dr. Tade. "On Ileya day, I saw him at his usual reading space under a faculty tree, where he had brought a chair tied to the tree to use whenever he came around to read."
