888 Candidates Fail Bar Exam, 251 Make First Class
Retired Justice of the Supreme Court, Mary Peter-Odili, Chairman of the Body of Benchers, expressed concerns about the judiciary's current state, citing dwindling public confidence due to conflicting judgments and lawyer indiscipline. To address this issue, the Body of Benchers has formed a committee to propose solutions.
A total of 888 candidates failed the final bar examination conducted in November 2023 by the Nigerian Bar Association. Out of 5,300 candidates who sat for the examination, 4,412 were successful. Among the successful candidates, 251 achieved a first-class grade.
The Director-General of the Nigerian Law School, Prof. Isa Hayatu Chiroma, disclosed these figures at the Call to Bar ceremony held in Abuja on Tuesday. He highlighted the outstanding performance of the candidates, with a success rate of 83.3% at the Bar final examinations.

The new lawyers were urged to uphold integrity and avoid corrupt practices that could tarnish the judiciary's image. Notably, among the new wigs is former Governor of Rivers State and immediate-past Minister of Transportation, Chief Rotimi Amaechi.
