ABSU Leads Fight Against Non-Communicable Diseases
ABSU launches comprehensive campaign urging healthier lifestyles to combat rising Non-Communicable Diseases, targeting risk factors like sugar use, alcohol consumption, physical inactivity, and poor diets.
In a bid to raise awareness and combat the rising prevalence of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), Abia State University has initiated a comprehensive campaign urging individuals to adopt healthier lifestyles and reduce common risk factors associated with these ailments.
The campaign, spearheaded by the university's medical faculty in collaboration with student organizations like NIMELSSA and ABSUTrends, emphasizes the importance of preventing NCDs through lifestyle modifications. With the motto "Say No to Non-Communicable Diseases," the initiative aims to educate both the university community and the wider population about the detrimental effects of risk factors such as excessive sugar consumption, harmful alcohol use, physical inactivity, and poor dietary habits.
Professor Emma Okeke, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Abia State University, highlighted the urgency of addressing NCDs, stating, "Many NCDs can be prevented through simple yet impactful lifestyle changes. By promoting awareness and encouraging healthier habits, we can significantly reduce the burden of these diseases on our society."

Non-Communicable Diseases encompass a wide range of health conditions, including cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancers, respiratory diseases, as well as mental health disorders and injuries. The campaign aims to destigmatize conversations surrounding these issues and promote a holistic approach to health and well-being.
