Acting Vice-Chancellor Praises Emeka Anyaoku's Impact on Nnamdi Azikiwe University
Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Carol Arinze-Umobi of Nnamdi Azikiwe University praised Chief Emeka Anyaoku for his substantial support in establishing the Emeka Anyaoku Institute for International Studies and Diplomacy. The project, featuring a 1,000-seat auditorium, is set to enhance the university's global standing.
Professor Carol Arinze-Umobi, Acting Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, has expressed high praise for Chief Emeka Anyaoku, former Commonwealth Secretary-General, recognizing his substantial contributions to global diplomacy, Nigeria, and Nnamdi Azikiwe University. Chief Anyaoku’s significant support, along with his distinguished network of friends, has enabled the construction of the Emeka Anyaoku Institute for International Studies and Diplomacy at the university.
Professor Arinze-Umobi highlighted the project’s impact, noting that the institute will feature a 1,000-seat auditorium designed to enhance the university’s ability to host international events, conferences, and academic gatherings. She described the development as a monumental addition to the institution, crediting Chief Anyaoku for bringing such a transformative project to the university. “This project, one of the largest ever undertaken by a single donor, will serve as a lasting testament to Chief Anyaoku’s vision and influence,” she said. The Vice-Chancellor also noted her satisfaction with the project’s progress, which is expected to be completed and inaugurated before the end of her tenure in January 2025.
The broader impact of the institute is anticipated to elevate Nnamdi Azikiwe University’s global standing and establish it as a center of academic excellence and diplomatic engagement. Professor Arinze-Umobi also commended Professor Au Nonyelu, the director of the institute, for his visionary leadership and commitment. She praised his innovative approach and dedication, which she believes are critical to the project's success.
Professor Nonyelu, who welcomed the Acting Vice-Chancellor to the project site, emphasized the institute’s significance as one of the largest projects in Nigerian universities. He assured that the institute is on schedule for completion by the end of 2024, with a grand commissioning event planned for January, coinciding with Chief Anyaoku’s birthday. “We are dedicated to meeting our deadline, and with the team’s commitment, we are confident in achieving this goal,” he stated.
Professor Nonyelu also expressed gratitude to Professor Arinze-Umobi for her leadership and stability during her tenure. The institute, once completed, will not only honor Chief Emeka Anyaoku’s legacy but also enhance Nnamdi Azikiwe University’s role as a key institution for international studies and diplomacy, benefiting both Nigeria and the global academic community.
