Adamawa State Polytechnic Students Protest Power and Water Outages
Protesters, who carried sticks and green leaves, voiced their frustration about being unable to reach the management to address their grievances.
Students of Adamawa State Polytechnic Yola (SPY) staged a protest early Monday morning, September 2, 2024, over a prolonged lack of electricity and water on campus. The demonstration, involving both male and female students from the hostels, caused significant disruptions to traffic on Jimeta-Yola road.
Protesters, who carried sticks and green leaves, voiced their frustration about being unable to reach the management to address their grievances. They also complained about restrictions on forming a student union and ignored concerns by the student affairs office.
There were no reports of injuries or damage to school property. During the protest, the Rector, Professor Mohammed Toungos, was stationed near the main gate under police protection and was eventually escorted away as tensions escalated.
Efforts to resolve the issues led to the restoration of electricity on campus. The rector is expected to meet with management officials and may address the media soon.
