AFRETEC Delegation to Visit UNILAG on March 16 for AI and Renewable Energy Collaboration

Two AFRETEC professors, Professor Sarath Tennakoon (Carnegie Mellon University, Rwanda) and Professor Siphila Wanjiku Mumenya (University of Nairobi), will visit the University of Lagos (UNILAG) on March 16, 2025, as part of a research collaboration on AI-driven carbon extraction from landfill waste for renewable energy.

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) is set to host two distinguished professors from the African Engineering and Technology Network (AFRETEC) as part of a collaborative research initiative focused on artificial intelligence (AI) and renewable energy.

The visiting professors, Professor Sarath Tennakoon, Head of Renewable Energy at Carnegie Mellon University, Rwanda, and Professor Siphila Wanjiku Mumenya, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Nairobi, will arrive at UNILAG on Sunday, March 16, 2025. Their visit is part of the AFRETEC Seed Grant project, which explores AI-driven techniques for extracting carbon from landfill waste to generate renewable energy.

During their stay, the delegation will engage with key university offices, including the Vice-Chancellor’s Office, Research Management Office, and the Office of International Relations, Partnership, and Prospects (IRPP). They will also meet with the Faculty of Engineering to discuss expanding collaborative efforts.

As part of their research, the professors will visit the Olusosun landfill, where they will hold discussions with stakeholders on the potential impact of their AI-driven project.
