Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II, the Emir of Kano and former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has been awarded a PhD in Islamic Law from the University of London. His doctoral thesis, titled “Codification of Islamic Family Law as an Instrument of Social Reform: A Case Study of the Emirate of Kano and Comparison with the Kingdom of Morocco,” was approved without corrections.

The news was shared by Kadaria Ahmed, CEO of RadioNow 95.3FM, via a Facebook post that included a video of Sanusi receiving congratulations from his examiners.

Sanusi’s academic journey has been notable. After being dethroned from his role as Emir in 2020 by the then-Kano State governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, he pursued this advanced degree. His previous academic achievements include a degree in economics from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, in 1981, a second bachelor’s degree in Islamic studies from Africa International University in Khartoum, Sudan, in 1997, and a master’s degree in economics from ABU.

Before his foray into banking and his eventual role as CBN governor in 2009, Sanusi taught economics at ABU from 1983 to 1985. His latest academic accomplishment reflects his continued dedication to both scholarly and practical aspects of Islamic law and social reform.
