Ahmadu Bello University Hosts Workshop on Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer

Ahmadu Bello University's Directorate of Research and Innovation (DRI) has organized a workshop on intellectual property and technology transfer for researchers and students. The event, held at the Assembly Hall, Main Campus, Samaru, Zaria, aimed to enhance knowledge on safeguarding research outputs and promoting academic entrepreneurship.  

Director of DRI, Prof. Joy J. Maina, highlighted the need for collaboration between natural and social sciences to boost the visibility of research in arts and humanities. She emphasized that the Directorate's mandate includes protecting intellectual property generated within the university.

Prof. Valentine Ntui of the University of Calabar presented on genome editing in genetically modified crops, explaining the use of molecular scissors for genetic modifications.  

Another presentation by ABU’s Prof. Sani Ibrahim focused on academic entrepreneurship, stressing its role in translating research into economic value and societal development.

Prof. Emmanuel O. Balogun, Coordinator of the Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer Office, described intellectual property as a tool for development, innovation, and commercialization, urging researchers to align their outputs with institutional strategies.  

The workshop featured interactive sessions and was attended by senior university officials, researchers, and postgraduate students. It reflects ABU's commitment to fostering innovation and protecting intellectual assets.
