Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) has collaborated with the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) to organize a workshop on tree planting, waste recycling, and sustainable practices for students.
The event, which took place on March 1, 2025, at the Abdullahi Smith Lecture Theatre, Main Campus, Samaru, Zaria, aimed to mitigate the effects of climate change within the university environment.
The workshop was part of UNICEF's "Green Rising" project, which targets students and aims to promote environmental sustainability. Prof. Sahalu B. Junaidu, Dean of Students Affairs Division, noted that ABU has a long tradition of tree planting and welcomed the partnership with UNICEF.
The project plans to plant 2,800 trees, with 100 student volunteers participating in the planting exercise twice a week. Mrs. Theresa K. Pamma, WASH Specialist with UNICEF, emphasized the importance of involving youths in climate change mitigation efforts, as they are the most affected and are crucial in driving change.
The workshop featured presentations on seedling production, waste recycling, and the health benefits of trees. Speakers included Prof. Bashir Yusuf Abubakar, Prof. Umar Ahmad, and Dr. S.K Musa. The event highlighted the significance of sustainable practices and environmental conservation in addressing climate change challenges.
