ASUU Condemns Dismissal of 120 Academics for Strike Participation

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Yola Zone, has condemned the dismissal of around 120 lecturers from several Nigerian universities for participating in the 2021 national strike. ASUU Yola Zone Coordinator, Dani Mammam, highlighted the affected institutions, including Lagos State University and Federal University of Technology Owerri.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Yola Zone, has vocally condemned the recent dismissal of approximately 120 academics from various Nigerian universities. These dismissals are reportedly linked to the academics' involvement in the 2021 national strike aimed at advocating for improved working conditions.

In a statement, ASUU Yola Zone Coordinator Dani Mammam identified the affected institutions as Federal University of Technology Owerri, Lagos State University, Ebonyi State University, Ambrose Ali University Ekpoma, Prince Abubakar Audu University, and Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University. Mammam criticized the dismissals as a severe infringement on academic freedom and human rights.

The ASUU coordinator underscored that the dismissed lecturers were exercising their constitutional right to protest and demanded their immediate reinstatement. He also called for the payment of their withheld salaries, emphasizing the importance of respecting academic staff's rights and maintaining a supportive environment for educational progress.
