Bayero University, Kano, was the venue for a significant conference recently, where the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas, praised the warm reception extended to attendees and highlighted the university’s commitment to hospitality.

He commended the Chemistry Department for its excellence in academic activities, particularly its prompt compilation of students' results and contributions to society. Professor Abbas pledged ongoing support for the department to enhance student and societal welfare.

The conference, organized by the Chemical Society of Nigeria (CSN), marked a reunion since its last event in 1994 and attracted over 600 registered participants. In a notable development, Professor Salisu Maiwada Abubakar, a distinguished Professor of Nutritional Biochemistry and Deputy Director of Outreach and Linkages at the Africa Center of Excellence for Population Health and Policy (ACEPHAP), was elected as the new President of the Nutrition Society of Nigeria (NSN) during the 54th Annual General Meeting on September 20, 2024. He is recognized as the first northern member to hold this position.

Earlier, at the conference's opening, Professor Maiwada received the prestigious Fellowship Award from the NSN, the highest honor conferred by the society, acknowledging his exceptional contributions to nutrition and public health in Nigeria. His colleagues celebrated this dual honor, expressing pride in his achievements and looking forward to his continued contributions to both the university and the nation’s nutrition initiatives.
