The Borno State Government has sponsored 180 students to pursue postgraduate studies in Malaysia and India, as part of its commitment to enhancing education and fostering development in the state.

The beneficiaries include 12 PhD and 53 master’s degree students at Sharda University, India, as well as 12 PhD and 73 master’s degree candidates at Integral University, India. Additionally, 29 students will study for master's and PhD programs at various universities in Malaysia.

During a send-off ceremony at the Government House in Maiduguri on Thursday, Governor Babagana Zulum urged the students to remain focused and committed to their studies. He emphasized the importance of using their education to contribute to the development of Borno State. 

“We expect each of you to exhibit strong dedication to your studies and, in the future, to any professional roles you assume. Your education is crucial to the progress of our state,” Zulum said.

The governor also announced a monthly allowance of $150 for the students' upkeep and promised automatic employment for them upon completion of their studies. Some of the beneficiaries, he added, will be recruited as lecturers at Borno’s tertiary institutions.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Engr. Lawan Abba Wakilbe, explained that the students would be pursuing courses in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). The government has disbursed ₦1.99 billion for tuition fees and an additional ₦338.5 million for local scholarships, benefiting 303 students.
