Borno State University Offers Condolences to Flood Victims
Professor Haruna Dantoro Dlakwa, Acting Vice Chancellor of Borno State University (BOSU), has expressed sympathy for the government and people of Borno State following the unprecedented flood disaster that ravaged Maiduguri and its environs.
The devastating flood, described as the worst in the state's history, resulted in significant loss of life and property, with damages estimated in billions of Naira. Professor Dlakwa specifically commiserated with Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, the Shehu of Borno, and those who lost loved ones and property.
The Acting Vice Chancellor praised Governor Zulum's prompt response to the crisis, personally leading rescue and relief efforts in the treacherous floodwaters. He also acknowledged the bravery of the Armed Forces, SEMA, NEMA, CJTF, voluntary organizations, individuals, women's groups, and youths who risked their lives to rescue others.
On behalf of the BOSU community, Professor Dlakwa urged affected persons to find solace in their faith and pray that such a disaster never occurs again ¹. This gesture of support comes as various organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United States, have also offered condolences and assistance to the flood victims ¹ ²[6).
The flood has displaced over 240,000 households, affecting approximately 40% of Maiduguri Metropolitan Council and Jere Local Government Area ³. In response, humanitarian efforts are underway to provide temporary shelters, food, clean water, and sanitation services.
