Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, through its Department of Economics, held its 3rd international conference on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, at the CBN Centre for Economics and Finance, Samaru. The event, themed “Navigating Economic Resilience in Nigeria: Strategies for Growth and Stability,” brought together leading academics and professionals to discuss Nigeria's economic challenges and potential solutions.

Representing the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kabiru Bala, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Prof. Raymond Bako commended the hybrid format of the conference, which enabled broader participation. In his remarks, the event chair, Prof. Mike Kwanashie, praised the department’s efforts in addressing pressing national issues, emphasizing the importance of a human-centered approach in economic policy.

Keynote speaker Prof. Adeola Adenikinju, President of the Nigerian Economic Society, highlighted the gap between policy pronouncements and implementation, urging practical reforms beyond policy announcements. Prof. A.G. Garba from the Centre for Growth and Development advocated for ethical practices that prioritize societal well-being over economic gain.

Additional contributions included Dr. Baba Musa Yusuf, Director-General of the West African Institute for Economic and Financial Management, who emphasized Nigeria’s need to diversify its economy and maximize resources. A second keynote address was delivered by Dr. Mansur Mukhtar, Chairman of the Governing Board of the Bank of Industry.

The conference also featured a book launch honoring Professors Mike Kwanashie and A.G. Garba for their contributions to economics.
