Ahmadu Bello University Welcomes U.S. Environmental Health Institute Delegation

The Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Prof. Kabiru Bala, received a delegation from the U.S.-based National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) on Tuesday, November 5, 2024. The delegation, led by NIEHS Deputy Director Dr. Trevor Allison Archer, visited ABU as part of an ongoing partnership with 47 global institutions, including ABU.

During the visit, Dr. Archer highlighted NIEHS’s commitment to funding environmental health research globally. He revealed that ABU has received $818,000 in research grants, along with an additional $4,000 extension, specifically for studies on maternal mortality.

Dr. Idowu Aimola, ABU’s project research leader, explained that the project aims to address Nigeria’s high maternal mortality rate by enhancing healthcare for pregnant women and improving birth outcomes. This research focuses on redefining placenta cell types and identifying drug targets to manage pregnancy complications.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Bala expressed gratitude to the NIEHS delegation for their support and encouraged ABU staff to secure further grants for the university. Pro-Chancellor and Council Chairman Mahmud Yayale Ahmed also welcomed the delegation, acknowledging the impact of the grants and expressing hope for more future funding to bolster research efforts at ABU.
