BOSONs 29th Annual Conference Holds in Ahmadu Bello University

This year’s Annual Conference and General Meeting of Botanical Society of Nigeria (BOSON), which is the 29th in the series, took place at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria with the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kabiru Bala, declaring the event open. 

The three-day conference with the theme “Plants and their Potentials in Combating Contemporary Global Challenges”, held from Monday, 19th June, 2023 to Wednesday, 21st June, 2023.

The launch of the society’s journal, Nigerian Journal of Botany, at which N675,000 was realised, was one of the highpoints of the three-day event. 

Declaring the conference open at the CBN Centre for Economics and Finance, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kabiru Bala, described the theme of the meeting as timely. 

Represented at the event by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic, Prof. Danladi A. Ameh, the Vice-Chancellor expressed hope that the participants would come up with a communique that would tackle the present challenges such as flooding, food security and diseases. 

In his remarks, the Chairman of the Occasion, Prof. A.K. Adamu, who is the Vice-Chancellor, Ibrahim Bamadamasi Babangida University, Lapai, commended the effort of the Department of Botany, Ahmadu Bello University in hosting the conference. 

While welcoming the participants and lead paper presenters to the conference, the President Botanical Society of Nigeria (BOSON), Prof. O.T. Ogundipe, expressed appreciation to the ABU Management, and the Local Organizing Committee for putting the conference together, and urged BOSON members to maintain the standard of the Society. 

Earlier in his address, the Head of the Department of Botany, ABU, Zaria, Prof. Bashir Y. Abubakar, said the conference theme was timely considering the global challenges facing Nigeria in recent times. 

He said that the unfavourable situation was affecting lives of the citizens and economy of the country, and appealed for more research and conferences to tackle the challenges globally.

Prof. M.F. Ishiyaku, Executive Director, Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR), Ahmadu Bello University, spoke on plants and food security; Dr. Magdalene Julkowska of Boyce Thompson Institute, the United States of America presented a paper on plants and climate change; and Dr. Joseph Onoja, Director General, Nigerian Conservation Foundation, talked on Ecosystem Restoration and Climate Change.
