Bower's Tower: A Hidden Gem of Ibadan Awaits Rediscovery
Bower's Tower

Nestled in one of the oldest areas of Ibadan, Oyo State lies a historical gem that holds tales of yesteryears - Bower's Tower. Unveiled on December 15, 1936, this towering monument is a testament to the rich history of the region. Designed by the renowned architect Taffy Jone, who also crafted the iconic Mapo Hall, Bower's Tower is named in honor of Captain Robert Lister Bower, the first British resident in Ibadan and a traveling commissioner for the interior of Yoruba land. Bower's pioneering efforts brought peace to the region during his era.

Standing tall at 60 feet, Bower's Tower graces Sapati Hill, the very place where Captain Bower administered his governance as the Lieutenant General, a title equivalent to "governor" in contemporary terms. It features a distinct spot known as the "pulpit," where warriors once convened with Bower, making it an emblem of historical significance.

While built in the 1930s, Bower's Tower has defied the ravages of time, maintaining its pristine appearance and structural integrity. Offering a breathtaking panoramic view of Ibadan, it allows visitors to gaze upon the sprawling urban landscape, with a vantage point atop Oke Are hill, where the tower stands. From this perch, one can marvel at the surrounding landmarks, including the iconic Cocoa House, the imposing Mokola Hill, the bustling Adamasingba stadium, the prestigious Polytechnic, Ibadan, the esteemed University College Hospital, and the ubiquitous rusty brown roofs that define the town.

However, despite its historical and architectural significance, Bower's Tower remains largely unknown to many due to years of neglect and poor maintenance, creating a misconception of it being a deserted tourist spot. This impressive structure, which reaches for the sky, now stands as a silent witness to tales of old, but its vibrancy has waned in the life bustling around it.

The tower's design features two entrances and narrow staircases that were purposefully created to offer an intimate and solitary journey to the summit, where the city unfolds before your eyes.
