Established in the 2010/2011 academic year, the university was initially envisioned to be located within Akwa Ibom State's Technology Triangle at the University Town. However, as a demonstration of its commitment to adapt and evolve, the administration of the Akwa Ibom State Government transformed the university into a multi-campus institution. The main campus, situated at Ikot Akpaden, Mkpat Enin Local Government Area, and a second campus known as Abak Campus in Obio Akpa, Oruk Anam Local Government Area, have since become symbols of educational excellence and growth.

While the university's roots may be traced back to technology and applied science, its transformation into a conventional university reflects the dynamic ethos of AKSU. The institution's expanded focus now includes arts and other fields of study, aligning it with global academic standards. In sync with this transformation, the university's name transitioned from Akwa Ibom State University of Technology to Akwa Ibom State University, signifying its broader educational mission.
The remarkable journey of Akwa Ibom State University began on October 18, 2000, in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. Then-Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Arc (Obong) Victor Attah, inaugurated a committee charged with the task of establishing the Akwa Ibom State University of Technology. The committee's distinguished members included luminaries such as Professor Ephraim E. Okon, Professor Ekong E. Ekong, Professor Ulo K. Enyenihi, Professor Reuben K. Udo, Professor E. W. Mbipom, Engr. Mrs. Mayen Adetiba, Engr. Esio O. Mboho, Engr. Akpan Ufot Ukpoho, Engr. Uyai Ekaette, Dr. Usen J. Antia, Sir Pius Wilson, Dr. Engineer Linus Asuquo, Mr. Moses Essien, Dr. Ini Udoka, Professor Joe Uyanga, and Mr. E. J. Akpan.

The university officially welcomed its pioneer students during the 2010/2011 academic year, marking the commencement of an exciting journey towards academic excellence and progress. A mandate to establish AKUTECH (Akwa Ibom University of Technology) was embraced by the former Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Obong (Barr) Godswill Akpabio. This endeavor led to the enactment of the University Law on September 15, 2009, by the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly. Today, Akwa Ibom State University stands as a symbol of transformation, adaptation, and growth, offering a wide range of academic programs and serving as a hub of knowledge and development in Nigeria. As the institution continues to expand and adapt, it remains dedicated to the pursuit of academic excellence and the empowerment of future generations.
