BUK Centre for Gender Studies Empowers Youth with Sustainable Development Conference

The Bayero University, Kano's Centre for Gender Studies (GCS) recently concluded the 6th Education for Sustainable Development Conference under the theme "Education for Sustainable Development."

Held at the Convocation Arena on Friday, December 15, 2023, the conference welcomed students from 15 universities across Nigeria, aimed at equipping the youth with tools for a sustainable future.

 

Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas, the Vice-Chancellor, highlighted the importance of fostering an environment conducive to nurturing youth empowerment. He emphasized the university's commitment to cultivating spaces for constructive dialogue and the development of life-changing skills among Nigerian youth, positioning them as ambassadors for sustainability.

Dr. Suwaiba Ahmad Sa'id, Director of the Centre for Gender Studies, expressed the conference's objective of identifying challenges obstructing sustainable development while harnessing the latent potential within the youth demographic. She emphasized the pivotal role education plays in shaping a sustainable future, both nationally and globally.

 

According to Dr. Sa'id, the discussions and insights from the conference will influence policy-making, initiatives, and community transformation within Nigeria and on a broader international scale.

In her assertion, she stressed, "Educating our youth about sustainability is paramount. Our initiative targets Nigeria's tertiary institutions to inform, sensitize, mentor, and empower the young generation about sustainability, fostering a greater understanding among them."

Distinguished figures graced the occasion, including Prof. Rukayya Ahmed Rufa'i, former Minister of Education and Chairperson of the conference. Prof. Rufa'i highlighted the conference's unique aspect, enabling diverse youth backgrounds to exchange experiences and ideas, facilitating greater success across socio-economic, political, and innovative spheres.

 

Saidu Wakili and Maryam Sadik, sharing their experiences as sustainability ambassadors, acknowledged the program's significant impact on their diverse capabilities.

The conference also recognized outstanding personalities for their remarkable achievements in various fields, including former Chief of Army Staff Ambassador Tukur Yusuf Baratai, former Ambassadors Dr. Safiya Ahmad Nuhu, Hamisu Umar Takalmawa, Dr. Ahmed Maakarfi, and former Vice-Chancellor Prof. Yahuza Muhammad, through prestigious awards.
