BUK International Conference Highlights Importance of Philanthropy in Contemporary Society
Sultan Harps on Low Philanthropic Activities As BUK VC Calls for Proper Coordination
The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa'ad Abubakar, has attributed the insecurity in the country to low philanthropic activities especially in the aspect of collection and payment of Zakkat (alms giving) amongst the wealthy individuals.

In a bid to address the prevailing insecurity in Nigeria, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa'ad Abubakar, emphasized the need for elevated philanthropic activities, particularly in the realm of Zakkat (alms giving). The Sultan expressed his concerns on Tuesday, February 20, 2024, during the opening of the 5th International Conference on "Contemporary Practice of Philanthropy and Educational Endowment in Africa." The conference was organized by Bayero University's International Institute of Islamic Banking and Finance (IBF) in collaboration with the Dawood Research Institute.

The Sultan lamented the decline in altruistic endeavors, stating, "People nowadays hardly give out for the sake of Allah," pointing to this as a contributing factor to the challenges faced by the nation.
The Emir of Dutse, Alhaji Muhammadu Hamim Nuhu Sanusi, representing the Sultan, disclosed that Dutse Emirate had successfully collected about one billion naira as Zakat, distributing it to nearly 30,000 people. He urged other kingdoms and emirates to follow suit, emphasizing the potential for relative peace and tranquility through such philanthropic efforts.
Acknowledging the societal shift towards self-centeredness and greed, the Sultan stressed the importance of adhering to Islamic Laws governing Zakat. He asserted that properly distributed Zakat could significantly alleviate many of the nation's problems.
Bayero University was commended for hosting the timely and relevant conference. The Vice Chancellor, Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas, underscored the significance of coordinated philanthropy policies, particularly directed towards educational institutions, as a means of fostering growth and development.
Professor Abbas bemoaned the decline in dedication to education, urging philanthropists to intervene for the betterment of education in the country and Africa at large. The conference, attended by scholars and individuals from across the globe, aimed to reawaken society's consciousness on philanthropy and support for the needy.

The Inspector General of Police, represented by Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Umar Muhammad Sanda, highlighted the relevance of the conference to ongoing government efforts in addressing security challenges. He emphasized the link between poverty and criminal activities, urging wealthy individuals to assist the needy during these challenging times.
Goodwill messages were delivered by various dignitaries, reaffirming their commitment to serving the community through altruistic activities.
The conference, conducted in partnership with Sule Lamido University, Khalifa Isiyaka Rabiu University (KHAIRUN), University of Jos, Umaru Musa Yar'adua University, and Al-Istiqama University, Sumaila, featured the presentation of over a hundred papers on philanthropy and educational endowment.
