Canada Increases Work Hours for International Students to 24 Per Week Starting September 2024
The temporary full-time work policy, introduced in October 2022 to address labor shortages during the COVID-19 pandemic recovery, will end on April 30, 2024. From May 1, 2024, until the new policy starts, international students will revert to the 20-hour per week limit for off-campus work.
Canada has announced an increase in the allowable work hours for international students from 20 to 24 per week. The announcement was made by Immigration Minister Marc Miller on April 29, 2024, during a press scrum at the Foyer of the House of Commons.
This change will take effect in September 2024, allowing students working off-campus to work additional hours. The increase to 24 hours aims to provide more financial support to international students while ensuring they can manage their academic responsibilities. The government believes this new limit is reasonable, allowing students to work three full eight-hour shifts per week without compromising their studies.
