Chimdindu Ijioma, a Year-12 student at James Hope College, has won a gold medal in the 2024 Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition, which received a record 34,939 entries from students across 56 Commonwealth countries.

Chimdindu Ijioma, a Year-12 student at James Hope College, has made her mark on the global stage by clinching a gold medal in the 2024 edition of the Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition. This prestigious competition invites high school students from all 56 Commonwealth member countries to showcase their writing talents, and this year saw a record-breaking 34,939 entries from across the Commonwealth regions.

In her category, participants were tasked with reflecting on the Samoan way of life, specifically the concept of 'aiga,' which embodies core family values such as selflessness, hospitality, cooperation, respect, and dignity. Chimdindu's compelling response highlighted the resilience and cooperation exhibited by the Igbo people in southeastern Nigeria as they rebuilt their lives after the Biafran War. Her essay also underscored the communal spirit of ‘Nwanne’ that connects Nigerians at home and in the diaspora, emphasizing the importance of these values in fostering cooperation and community within the Commonwealth.
