Covenant University’s Covenant Applied Informatics and Communication Africa Centre of Excellence (CApIC-ACE) has achieved a significant milestone in cancer research with the launch of its Precision Oncology Workshop. The workshop, which commenced on Monday, October 14, 2024, at the Covenant University Center for Research Innovation and Discovery (CUCRID), aims to revolutionize cancer care in Nigeria and the West African region through genomics.

Themed "Personalizing Cancer Care in Africa through Genomics," the workshop, organized in collaboration with Illumina and ISN, seeks to build capacity and stimulate interest in genomics research, addressing critical gaps in cancer treatment. The event is part of CApIC-ACE's broader mission, funded under the World Bank ACE Impact project, to enhance research and academic-industry collaborations across Africa.

Professor Conrad Omonhinmin, Director of CUCRID, representing Covenant University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Abiodun Adebayo, highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts in tackling cancer, expressing hope that the partnership with Illumina would lead to groundbreaking advancements in genomics research.

Mrs. Regina Tobi-David, Covenant University Registrar, emphasized the workshop’s role in exploring innovative cancer treatments and urged participants to actively engage and share knowledge. She expressed optimism that discussions would contribute to improving cancer diagnosis and treatment across the continent.

Dr. Arisegi Sharafadeen Adeniyi, representing the Director General of the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (NICRAT), highlighted the importance of minimizing trial-and-error approaches in cancer research. He stressed that capacity building in research, data collection, and collaboration would pave the way for breakthroughs in cancer treatment.

Dr. Tolulope Adewole of the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) praised CApIC-ACE’s work and announced plans to establish new diagnostic centers across Nigeria, including cutting-edge genomic research facilities in Lagos and Abuja.

The workshop is expected to foster interdisciplinary collaboration between clinicians and scientists, with Professor Emeka Iweala, CApIC-ACE Centre Leader, emphasizing its role in delivering personalized cancer treatments tailored to individual genetic profiles. He reaffirmed the center’s commitment to capacity building, having trained over 160 postgraduate students, 200 researchers, and empowered thousands of community members with vital health information.

The event includes educational sessions, panel discussions, and hands-on training aimed at advancing cancer care across Africa. Participants have the opportunity to network with leading experts and researchers, exploring innovative approaches to cancer management.
