In a move aimed at alleviating the financial burden on families, the Ebonyi State government has announced plans to subsidize the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and National Examinations Council (NECO) fees for students in public schools. Governor Rt Hon Francis Nwifuru revealed this initiative during a meeting with the management of the Local Government Staff Pensions Board.

Expressing concern over the recent hike in examination registration fees, Governor Nwifuru acknowledged the challenges faced by parents and students alike. He emphasized the government's commitment to serving its people and stated that while it may not be feasible to cover the entire cost, the government would endeavor to pay at least 50 percent of the fees.

The governor highlighted the importance of education and ensuring that financial constraints do not hinder students' academic pursuits. He directed the State Commissioner for Education to assess the number of students registering for these examinations in public schools to determine the extent of financial assistance required.

Furthermore, Governor Nwifuru addressed pension issues, announcing that gratuity payments would now be processed on a monthly basis. He urged retiring civil servants to expedite the retirement paperwork to facilitate prompt payment of benefits, emphasizing the government's commitment to ensuring financial security for its retirees.

Commending the proactive measures taken by the executive secretary of the pension board, Mr. Emeka Nwonu, the governor reiterated the government's dedication to addressing pension-related challenges.
