Exchange student, by name Pablo Camargo of the HFBK University of Fine Arts, Hamburg, Germany winds down at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) experience with Solo exhibition.

As part of events to wind down his activities as an exchange student at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Mr. Pablo Camargo of the HFBK University of Fine Arts, Hamburg, Germany staged a solo art exhibition titled Amigas Amigos from Wednesday, June 21 to Friday, June 23, 2023 at the Lagoon Gallery, Department of Creative Arts, UNILAG.

The intriguing exhibition, a culmination of Mr. Camargo’s learning experience since his arrival in UNILAG on January 30, 2023, featured earthy color scheme, paintings, and drawings as well as music performances to serenade guests.

Speaking at the opening of the exhibition, former Head of Creative Arts Department and a senior member of the Visual Arts Unit, Professor Adepeju Layiwola described Pablo Camargo as a resilient student with skills to blend in any project.

Professor Layiwola underscored the importance of the collaboration between UNILAG and HFBK University of Fine Arts, Hamburg as a tool for mutual international understanding between the two institutions.

She revealed that plans were currently underway for a Creative Arts student of UNILAG, Jesudara Himiakaye to visit the Federal Republic of Germany, in fulfillment of the exchange programme agreement.

Professor Layiwola who is the first female Professor of Visual Arts in UNILAG stressed that “those who shall benefit from the exchange agreement must stand out among their peers. If you must be considered for selection in this project, then you must be of the best character possible”.

The UNILAG Supervisor of Mr. Camargo for his exchange period, Dr. Olusola Timothy Ogunfuwa described him as an impeccable student full of enthusiasm, uniqueness, and a great sense of humour.

According to him,“Pablo’s deft handling of the Art and how he immersed himself in modern Nigerian lingo earned him a spot among the well-known student artists in the department.  He will surely be missed by everyone.”

In his remarks, Mr. Camargo expressed satisfaction at his UNILAG learning experience, as well as the beautiful relationship forged with the staff and students of the institution. 

His words “ … the title of the exhibition “Amigas Amigos”  meaning “friend and friends” is a testament to the friendship I have enjoyed, built on mutual respect and communication with both staff and students in the department. They have truly offered me guidance and support whilst I adjusted to the African art ecosystem.”
