FCE Lagos Closed Indefinitely After Campus Violence
The Federal College of Education (Technical), Akoka, Lagos, has been closed indefinitely following a violent outbreak on campus earlier this week. The closure will remain in effect until the investigation is complete and measures are taken to address the issues that led to the outbreak of violence.
The Federal College of Education (Technical), Akoka, Lagos, has been closed indefinitely following a violent outbreak on campus earlier this week. The decision was made by the institution's Governing Council to facilitate a thorough investigation into the unrest.
The violence erupted on Monday when students, protesting against poor campus welfare and alleged mistreatment by the provost, vandalized the official vehicles of the governing council members. Videos circulating on social media showed the students attacking the vehicles and narrowly missing physical confrontations with the council members.

According to reports, the students had initially protested in response to grievances about campus conditions and the provost’s handling of these issues. An anonymous student claimed, “Police officers came and started shooting students,” alleging that the school management had invited the police to the campus. The student also alleged that during the police intervention, tear gas was used, and some staff members were beaten and arrested.
In response, Provost Dr. Wahab Azeez accused staff members of inciting the protests in an attempt to undermine his position. However, this claim was disputed by both students and some staff members.

To address the violence and restore order, the Lagos State Police Command arrested 32 individuals for allegedly attacking a Federal Government inspection team that had been dispatched to mediate the conflict.
The provost announced the indefinite closure of the college to allow the Governing Council to investigate the violent incidents and assess the damage. “The college has been shut because of the violent rampage of the students yesterday,” Dr. Azeez stated. “The council is still on the ground. They will decide what line of action to take about the incident. The rampage has to be probed because they need to know the immediate and remote cause of the crisis that led to the vandalization of college property and facilities.”
The closure will remain in effect until the investigation is complete and measures are taken to address the issues that led to the outbreak of violence.
