Professor Ali Is’haq Shugaba, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Administration and Provost of the College of Medicine at the Federal University of Lafia (FULafia), has emphasized the importance of anatomy as the foundational discipline in medical practice.

Delivering his inaugural professorial lecture at the university, Shugaba stressed that anatomy provides the essential knowledge needed for clinical activities such as symptom evaluation, physical examination, and therapeutic procedures.

The lecture, titled "Between Creation and Dying: Of Structures, Functions, and Diseases," was held at the MIS Multi-purpose Hall at the Permanent Site Campus of FULafia. Shugaba explained that both gross and microanatomy are crucial for understanding the structure and function of the human body, contributing to advancements in medicine, biotechnology, and biomedical engineering.

Shugaba proposed that a basic degree in anatomy should be a requirement for studying medicine and dentistry. He also called for enhanced anatomy education through professional associations to ensure a thorough understanding of living systems. Additionally, he advocated for the incorporation of artificial intelligence (AI) into medical practice, with an emphasis on ethical considerations.

Shugaba also recommended the establishment of a biomedical engineering department at FULafia to provide training and services in biology, nutrition, engineering, technology, and AI. He stressed the need for collaboration between regulatory bodies, postgraduate institutions, and governments to improve healthcare delivery.

The Vice-Chancellor of FULafia, Professor Shehu Abdul Rahman, praised Shugaba for his dedication to medical sciences and his contributions to anatomy. The event was attended by various dignitaries, including Professor Ishaya Tanko, co-chairman of the event, who also commended Shugaba's work in anatomy. The lecture concluded with the presentation of a certificate and plaque to Shugaba in recognition of his remarkable contributions.
