Addressing the audience at the 21st annual public lecture and luncheon organized by the Obafemi Awolowo University Muslim Graduates’ Association (UNIFEMGA), Lagos Chapter, Fagbohun highlighted systemic and attitudinal issues as major hindrances to Nigeria's progress, particularly within the political governance framework.

Fagbohun noted the successes of nations like the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Singapore, South Korea, and China, which have overcome economic crises and risen to prominence on the global stage. He lamented Nigeria's failure to replicate such successes, attributing it to entrenched systemic issues.

The former LASU VC outlined six fundamental challenges facing Nigeria: deficient federalism, a weak judicial system, insecurity, an ineffective educational system, poor electricity supply, and a lack of transparency and accountability.

Proposing solutions, Fagbohun advocated for aggressive leveraging of economic sectors where Nigeria has a comparative advantage, such as agriculture, entertainment, tourism, and blue economies with ICT integration. He also stressed the importance of supporting Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) to drive job creation and economic growth.

While urging caution against blindly following external economic advice, Fagbohun emphasized the need for commitment, determination, and innovation from both public and private sectors to realize a new Nigeria where basic needs are met and life is meaningful.

In his welcome address, Mr. Saheed Bashiru, Chairman of UNIFEMGA, Lagos Chapter, reiterated the association's commitment to advancing the socio-economic interests of its members and contributing to national development.
