UNIJOS Pays Four Times More, Receives Only 5 Hours of Power Daily — VC Prof. Tanko Ishaya

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos (UNIJOS), Professor Tanko Ishaya, has expressed concern over the dire power situation at the university. Speaking during his third-year anniversary in office, he revealed that while the institution's monthly electricity bills have increased fourfold due to the new banding by Discos, the university is only receiving a mere five hours of electricity per day.

Professor Ishaya lamented that these power shortages have become a major challenge for both the administration and the students, significantly affecting the learning environment. The rising energy costs have made it difficult for the university to manage its financial obligations effectively, despite attempts to implement energy-saving measures.

To mitigate the situation, the university is exploring solar energy solutions, though the associated costs remain prohibitive. Ishaya emphasized that the institution is actively seeking partnerships with private companies and governmental bodies to fund a solar farm project. He further explained that the university has engaged in discussions with the Minister of Finance and the Rural Electrification Agency to secure support.

In addition to tackling power issues, the VC provided updates on student welfare, stating that the university is working closely with the Directorate of Student Affairs to monitor living conditions, both on and off-campus. Regarding academics, Professor Ishaya highlighted the university's progress, with 70 out of 75 academic programs receiving full accreditation from the National Universities Commission (NUC), a significant improvement from 57.3% before his tenure began.
