Three Nigerian governors have postponed the resumption of primary and post-primary schools in their states, citing various reasons. The affected states are Edo, Abia, and Kano.

In Edo State, Governor Godwin Obaseki announced an indefinite postponement due to the recent surge in petrol prices, which has caused significant hardships for parents and guardians. The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Ojo Akin-Longe, stated that all public and private schools would remain closed until further notice. The government urged parents and guardians to closely monitor their children’s activities during this period.

In Abia State, Governor Alex Otti postponed the resumption date for the 2024/2025 academic session from September 16 to September 23. Commissioner for Information Okey Kanu explained that the delay was due to a coinciding Muslim holiday. He also mentioned that the second batch of teacher training would take place from September 11 to September 20.

In Kano State, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf announced a delay in the resumption of schools, which was initially scheduled for September 9, 2024. The Director of Public Enlightenment, Balarabe Kiru, speaking on behalf of the Commissioner of Education, Umar Doguwa, cited unforeseen circumstances as the reason for the postponement. A new resumption date will be announced soon by the Ministry of Education.

These decisions have been influenced by the high cost of transportation and other challenges faced by parents and guardians due to the recent increase in fuel prices.
